What your reaction time actually measures
When the box turns green, light hits your retina, a signal travels to the visual cortex, your brain decides to act, and a command races down to your finger. That whole chain — perception, decision, movement — is what a reaction-time test captures, and for a simple visual cue it typically takes 200–300 milliseconds. That's faster than a single blink (which takes around 100–150 ms to complete). Reaction time is distinct from reflexes like the knee-jerk, which bypass the brain entirely and are much quicker; here your conscious brain is genuinely in the loop.
What changes your score — and how to improve it
Reaction time isn't fixed. It's fastest in your late teens and twenties and slows gently with age; it's worse when you're tired, distracted or have had alcohol, and better when you're alert and warmed up. Practice helps a little — anticipating the rhythm and keeping your finger ready shaves off a few milliseconds — but the biggest gains come from being rested and focused. Because this test runs in a browser, hardware adds noise: a 240 Hz gaming monitor and a wired mouse will read faster than a phone on battery-saver.
